Section 137 Expenditure
Parish councils play an important role in supporting and improving the wellbeing of their local communities. In addition to delivering services and maintaining local facilities, they have the ability to fund projects and initiatives that bring wider community benefit. One of the key ways they do this is through the use of powers granted under Section 137 of the Local Government Act 1972. This legislation allows parish councils to spend a limited amount of money each year on activities or projects that are not otherwise covered by their existing powers, provided the benefit is to the local area or its residents.
Using these powers, the Parish Council is able to support a wide range of community initiatives, from local events and environmental improvements to activities that promote health, wellbeing, and social inclusion. To help deliver this, the Council operates a grant scheme that local groups and organisations can apply to. This scheme is designed to support projects and activities that make a positive difference within the parish, helping community groups to grow, thrive, and continue providing valuable services for residents.
The financial limit for 2025 - 2026 is £11.10 per elector.
